FIVE YOUTH FROM THE ALBUQUERQUE BRANCH

 COMPETE IN MIAMI, FLORIDA AT THE NATIONAL ACT-SO COMPETITION

(Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics)

 July 31 thru August 3, 2008

 

Patricia Gail Brown 17, David E. Brown 16, Simone Crum 17,  Evan A. Harrison 18, and José Luis Miranda 17, all youth members of the Albuquerque Branch, NAACP have returned from the National Competition that marks personal high achievement.  

 

There was one national winner announced at the awards ceremony on August 3rd , but all received opportunities at scholarship and opportunities to advance in their area of interest.

 

David E. Brown, 16, (son of Galvin and Sandra Brown) earned a Gold Medal, 1st Place, in the category of Computer Science: Use of Visual Basic Software to Program Nano Biobots to Fight Pathological Diseases

 

Patricia Gail Brown, 17, (daughter of Galvin and Sandra Brown) was offered an opportunity to pursue her study at Massachusetts Institute of Technology upon application and acceptance for her topic: Engineering Apoptosis to Eliminate Primary Brain Tumors.

 

High school students arrived in Orlando, Florida from across the nation at the end of July to compete in the areas of Science, Mathematics, Humanities, Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Business. These students work for months, sometimes years to polish their presentations and reports. The standard of performance among the competitors is exceedingly high and it is a great accomplishment to demonstrate their achievement and knowledge at the national level.

 

Seventy-six competitors earned Gold, Silver or Bronze medals. Medallists receive financial scholarships, computers and numerous educational enrichment opportunities.  All competitors have the opportunity to establish important ties with other high achieving students from across the nation at the contest. Along with the others, Albuquerque students were exposed to educational and professional opportunities that will enhance their opportunities for future success.
